Samsung Unpacked: the Galaxy Z Flip has arrived!
Galaxy Z Flip, Galaxy S20 Ultra and everything else announced!
Last night saw Samsung host it’s much anticipated, annual ‘Unpacked’ event in San Francisco, where hundreds of industry experts, journalists and fans gathered, to get a first glimpse of Samsung’s latest flagship smartphones. Samsung gave us an early teaser about what to expect from this year’s event, by revealing their stunning new Galaxy Z Flip phone in a commercial during the Oscars on Sunday night, but fans will be just as excited to get their hands on the new Galaxy S20 range, which includes the mammoth Galaxy S20 Ultra.
So, if you’re a tech enthusiast or you didn’t manage to watch the event live, then let us give you a quick run-down here of everything you missed.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip
Who said folding phones were a thing of the past? There’s been a lot of excitement around Samsung’s new folding phone and following several rumours and leaked images, we can finally reveal that it was everything we expected and more.
The Galaxy Z Flip comes with an incredible 6.7-inch OLED Infinity Flex Display, which folds in half, like a clamshell, transforming it into a compact, pocket-sized device. It also has a 1.1-inch exterior display for all the things you might need at a glance, such as notifications, time, battery life etc. As you can see from the pictures, the Z Flip also has the ability to hold itself open in a sort of halfway position, which Samsung says is great for hands-free video calls and selfies, as it splits the screen – turning the top half into a viewing area and putting the controls on the bottom half.
It comes with 256GB storage and there are two 12-megapixel cameras on the back, a regular wide angle and an ultra-wide angle, plus a 10-megapixel front-facing selfie camera. It is expected to be available to buy from 14th February, but at around £1,300 it might be a tad expensive for a last-minute Valentine’s Day present.
Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+ and S20 Ultra
Samsung’s popular Galaxy range got their annual refresh and you’ll notice they appear to have skipped a few numbers, jumping straight from the Galaxy S10 right up to the S20. There are three new models – the S20 with a 6.2-inch display, the S20+ at 6.7-inches and Samsung biggest ever phone, the S20 Ultra with a huge 6.9-inch screen.
Samsung have built this up as ‘the phone that will change photography’, so clearly a lot of time and effort has been spent on the camera. On the S20 and S20+ the new Pro-Grade multi-camera includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide lens, a 12-megapixel wide angle lens and a 64-megapxiel telephoto lens, while the S20 Ultra bumps it up to four cameras with the introduction of a depth sensor and an even bigger 108-megapixel wide angle lens.
The S20 range also supports super high resolution 8K video – that’s four times more pixels than 4K Ultra High Definition! This means you can record a video, then scroll through your footage to capture the perfect moment with a 33-megapixel still photo.
Another impressive feature is the revolutionary camera AI. With Single Take mode, you can record up to 10 seconds and get back a variety of different formats, allowing you to select the best style without having to re-record several times.
For those of you that enjoy gaming, you’ll be pleased to hear that all three S20 smartphones have a 120Hz frame rate for smoother, sharper gameplay and Samsung have also worked on improving the responsiveness for less touchscreen lag.
You’ll have to wait a little bit longer though before you can get your hands on a Galaxy S20, as they are not due to start shipping until early March.
Samsung Galaxy Buds+
The final announcement from the event was Samsung’s rival to Apple’s AirPods – the Galaxy Buds+. Now while the design doesn’t appear to have changed from the existing Galaxy Buds, there has been some big improvements to sound quality and performance. You can now enjoy up to 11 hours of listening from a single charge and double that when you use the wireless charging case. Plus, if you own a compatible Galaxy smartphone you can take advantage of the ‘Power Share’ feature to add even more juice.
Thanks to Samsung’s partnership with Spotify, the Galaxy Buds+ will deliver recommended songs based on your music history with just one touch.
